What Are the Building Blocks of Faith?

The Building Blocks of Faith describe four spiritual needs everyone has that are met in Christ. Addressing these needs helps faith to flourish in people of all ages.

The Building Blocks of Faith concept was developed by Laura Keeley (a regional catalyzer with Faith Formation) and Robert J. Keeley. They’re helpful for assessing and shaping faith formation efforts in churches, Christian schools, and other faith communities, and for strengthening our own personal faith formation as well.

THE NEED TO BELONG

For our faith to grow, our deep need for belonging must be met. We need God’s Spirit and God’s people to help us know that we belong to God and that we belong in God’s family, the church.

THE NEED TO KNOW AND UNDERSTAND

For our faith to grow, each of us must grow in our knowledge and understanding of who God is, how God’s salvation story is unfolding over time, and what our own part is in that story.

THE NEED TO HAVE HOPE

For our faith to grow, we need to have a confident hope through Christ that God will keep God’s promises and that all things are working together for our salvation so that we might bless others.

THE NEED TO BE CALLED AND EQUIPPED

For our faith to grow, we need to discern God’s call and be equipped to use our gifts and talents in the service of God and our neighbor.
