November 25, 2013

“Lord, hear our prayer" is the theme of a regional prayer summit that is set for January 5, 2014 at Trinity Christian Reformed Church in Edmonton, Alberta.

This will be the third regional prayer summit to take place across North America since the CRC held its first and then second denomination-wide summits.

The first summit was in April 2012 at All Nations CRC in Lakeview Terrace, Calif. The second summit took place in January 2013 at the same church.

Rev. Moses Chung, director of Christian Reformed Home Missions and one of the coordinators of the California prayer summits, says he is delighted to see the movement of prayer taking hold in these regional settings.

“This is exactly what we hoped to see — God’s spirit of prayer moving throughout the people of the church,” he says.

The first regional summit, called the 2013 Prayer Gathering, was held Oct. 11-12 ,  for the churches in the Classis Red Mesa, New Mexico area. It was  attended by about 75 people. The theme of the event was “Called to Pray.”

The second summit was held jointly with the Reformed Church in America. It took place in early November at Corinth Reformed Church near Grand Rapids, Mich.

Including high school, college and seminary students who attended for free, the final count of participants was 398. More than 125 churches were represented.

A survey taken after the event showed overwhelmingly that attendees felt the event could have been longer. They also said they would like to see another one take place next year.

Focusing on CRC congregations in Classis Alberta North, the prayer summit in January will offer times of prayer, worship, witness or testimony and a teaching segment.

Bill Tuininga, one of those who will speak at the Edmonton summit says: “For me prayer takes discipline — I have to work at it. And it doesn't take much to get me side tracked. I'm learning, slowly, how to handle the distractions. I'm no expert, but I am eager to share with you what I am learning and what Scripture teaches us about hindrances to prayer.”
