Prisoners Seek Today Devotionals

When a friend allowed Wanda to read her copy of September’s Today devotional, she found that month’s theme of happiness especially intriguing from her prison cell.

“You don’t see much true happiness in prison,” Wanda said. “I would really love to receive more issues to fill my heart with joy again.”

Wanda was not alone in finding joy through the devotional while in prison. Many inmates who receive the Back to God Ministries International (BTGMI) booklet have shared how God is using the booklets to change their lives.

“There’s not a month that goes by that I don’t find the Holy Spirit talking to me through the day’s scripture or reading,” shared James, from a Colorado prison.

Many prison chaplains request quantities of the Today and use the devotionals to disciple inmates. One chaplain asked BTGMI to send double the number of Today booklets to use in his prison ministry.

“The devotionals are very popular and we find ourselves coming up short. I am continuously searching for ways to minister to the inmates,” said the chaplain.

Today has been a consistent resource. I would be at a loss to fill the void should we discontinue its availability.”

BTGMI also mails the booklets free of charge to individual prisoners at their request or at the request of their family members.

Gasper wrote, “God’s Word has found me through your Today devotional. It has really been a blessing to me as well as other brothers that are incarcerated here. It has enlightened us in God’s Word and embraced us with God’s love.”

When inmates decide to dedicate their lives to the Lord, they say they end up finding true happiness.

“I am paying for my mistakes, but since I’ve been here God has become the head of my life and I couldn’t be happier,” said Stanley. “I use your devotional to help me with my studies and for inspiration.
