On the shores of Geneva Lake in Williams Bay, Wis. a family met for their small reunion during the 4th of July weekend. As they sat, they could hear music coming from another group.

Sue, who was part of the family reunion, says they happened to be listening to music from Escape to the Lake, a Back to God Ministries International (BTGMI) event which ran July 4-7.

“I was an 'observer,' not a participant,” said Sue.

“It was heart-filling to see families share talent, music, and friendship. God was there.”

The event at Conference Point Center, featured 12 artists from ReFrame Media's Under the Radar program. Reframe Media is BTGMI’s English-language ministry.

Under the Radar (UTR) hosted the event along with Lake Geneva Camps and Conferences, who recently took over management at Conference Point Center after years of neglect (see recent article).

Musicians at Escape to the Lake shared their musical gifts through a range of activities, including live performances, testimonies, and musical workshops.

“God moments were not just a part of the retreat, but it was a sacred experience as we all found God present in the beauty of creation, the skillfully presented music, and in the hearts of all the people,” said Dave Trout, UTR producer.

“It was a spiritual experience, where music, conversations, sessions, devotions, and classes were just a means to a much greater end.”

As attendees listened to music, they saw God working through their shared passion to strengthen their relationship with him, said participants.

"The community feeling, combined with an intentional focus on God, raised this to great heights,” said Luke.

The attendees also saw God working through the beauty of nature. Along with the musical activities, Escape to the Lake included fishing, tubing, hiking, and other outdoor activities.

“The setting was gorgeous,” said Tom Henderson, of Minneapolis, Minn. “There are always waves coming in; you just relax immediately.”

As participants felt strengthened in their faith, artists also appreciated the opportunity to worship the Lord through different musical talents.

“I need help believing.” said Matthew Clark, who played at the first night’s concert. “I need events like this…to go somewhere to be with people who help me. To hear songs, to have conversations with people…this has been that kind of nourishing event.”
