Missionaries Escape Guinea Safely

February 19, 2007

All missionaries serving with Christian Reformed World Missions in Guinea were able to leave the strife-torn country Saturday.

Traveling in two separate groups, the larger, consisting of seven missionaries plus children, traveled 19 hours over land to cross the border into Senegal.  The others—one family—traveled by aircraft to Senegal and on to Banjul, The Gambia, from Guinea’s capital city, Conakry. The main group plans to join them in Banjul, where they will await further developments.

“We praise God that they were able to travel safely,” said Steve Van Zanen, spokesperson for the Guinea Event Response Team, an ad hoc committee struck by the Christian Reformed Church to monitor the situation. “We ask for your continued prayers for the country and people of Guinea as they look forward to peace and justice in their land.”

The evacuation came as a result of civil unrest that began February 10. Guinea remains under a state of martial law.
