Faith Alive Announces Awards

May 9, 2011

Faith Alive Christian Resources has announced that two of its periodicals – Reformed Worship and The Banner – won four awards between them in the 95th annual “Best of the Christian Press” competition sponsored by the Associated Church Press (ACP), the oldest and largest religious press association in North America.

The Banner also won three awards in the Evangelical Press Association competition.

Faith Alive Christian Resources is the publishing agency of the Christian Reformed Church in North America.

The awards were given April 29 at a banquet during the ACP’s annual convention in Chicago, IL. There were awards in 60 categories. Judges read through nearly 1,500 entries in making their determinations.

Reformed Worship, which focuses on matters of liturgy and worship, won First place, Award of Excellence, in the For a Magazine Editorial or Opinion Piece category, for the article "I've Got a Song for That: A Case for Singing the Psalms Creatively and Faithfully" by Marty Haugen. Reformed Worship also won an award of merit for “Praying Our Emotions” by Kevin and Jerry Adams.

In this highly original essay for Reformed Worship, "I’ve Got a Song for That," says the judge of the article, Marty Haugen makes the case to resume singing settings of the Psalms in worship – and he provides a few bars for readers to hum, if they want to join his chorus. Haugen, a musical performer and composer, argues that "our words matter," but few parishioners can recite more than a very few verses from psalms.

The article titled "In Praying Our Emotions" by Kevin and Gerry Adams, said the judge, is "meaningful, well planned. Feels inspired. Beautiful words and rich experiences. Real world examples tied together with opportunities to meet in the 'thin places' where God is experienced more deeply."

The Banner, the CRC’s official monthly magazine, won an honorable mention in the Media Review Section category for “Tuned In,” the Banner’s media section. Kristy Quist is the editor.

In the Devotional/Inspirational: Short Format category, The Banner won an honorable mention for Rev. Reggie Smith's article "Burglary in Progress."

The Banner also won three awards in the 2010 Higher Goals Awards competition. The awards were presented by the  Evangelical Press Association at its annual convention, held in Chicago May 4-6, 2011. This contest honors the best work done by EPA publications during the calendar year 2010.

In the Interviuew category, The Banner won a fifth Place for "Young and Undocumented" by Adrianna Oudman; Bob De Moor, Editor. In the Original Art: Traditional category, The Banner won third place for "Who Rakes the Woods?" by Scott Holladay, artist; Dean Heetderks, Pete Euwema, and Frank Gutbrod, designers; Bob De Moor, Editor.

The magazine also won second place in the Single Photo: Controlled category. The picture was titled "Van Sloten" and the photograph was taken by Noah Fallis; Bob De Moor, Editor.
