The Banner Wins Awards
The Banner, the monthly magazine of the Christian Reformed Church, has won five awards in the annual Associated Church Press (ACP) "Best of the Press" competition, it was announced last week at the ACP’s annual spring convention.
The awards include an Award of Excellence, an Award of Merit, and three Honorable Mentions.
Each year the ACP sponsors its Best of the Press awards competition for its publication-member newspapers, newsletters, magazines, journals, news services, E-zines, and websites.
Categories and guidelines are released in the late fall and eligible entries are due in early January.
Winners in the categories of journalistic and creative writing, theology, design and marketing and overall best in class are announced at the annual spring convention, which was held this year in Indianapolis, Ind.
The Banner won its Award of Excellence in the category titled Reporting and Writing: Convention or Meeting Coverage. This was for the magazine’s coverage of Synod 2012. Gayla R. Postma was news editor; Bob De Moor, the editor, and Dean Heetderks, art director.
The magazine’s Award of Merit came in the Feature Article, Long Format category. The article was the Art of Lament by Nicholas Wolterstorff. Bob De Moor, the editor, and Dean Heetderks, art director.
Then there are the three Honorable Mentions:
- Theological: Devotional/Inspirational, Short Format: Beauty of Belonging, Harold Hiemstra, author; Bob De Moor, editor; Dean Heetderks, art director; Frank Gutbrod, graphic design; Pete Euwema, graphic design.

- Reporting and Writing: News Story, Magazine: Why Being a Binational Church is So Important, Gayla Postma, author; Bob De Moor, editor; Dean Heeterks, art director.
