Ebola Outbreak in Congo

Ebola is spreading rapidly in the Democratic Republic of Congo. More than 5,700 cases and 2,700 deaths have now been reported, making this the country’s largest Ebola outbreak ever. The virus is moving through communities already experiencing conflict, displacement and fragile healthcare systems. There are reasons for hope: health workers have begun receiving vaccines, and clinical trials are testing possible treatments. Containing this Ebola crisis will require trust in community leadership working to contain the virus, safe access to healthcare and sustained international support.

God of mercy, hold close the people of Congo who are living with conflict and fear. Put an end to this outbreak we pray. Protect healthcare workers who are serving in dangerous circumstances. We pray for trust to be built in communities and the provision of both resources and access to healthcare. 

Medical Assistance in Dying and Mental Health

Canada’s approach to medical assistance in dying (MAID) continues to raise important questions about rights of persons living with disability. In 2025, the United Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities called on Canada to repeal Track 2 MAiD, including the planned expansion to people whose sole underlying medical condition is a mental illness. The Committee expressed concern that people with disabilities may face pressure to choose death when adequate supports, healthcare, housing and other services are not available. Whatever one’s broader views on MAiD, the prospect of extending eligibility to people whose sole underlying condition is a mental illness deserves careful consideration. Concerns about inadequate care make it particularly important to ask whether Canadians are being offered genuine choices and the supports necessary to live with dignity before MAiD becomes an option.

God of life and death, We pray for people living with disability, mental illness, and suffering. Give wisdom and courage to those making decisions about medical assistance in dying. Help us build a society where no one feels that death is the only way out of pain, isolation or inadequate care.

Scaling Up What Works

Sometimes justice work can feel impossibly big. Global problems look enormous, and our own efforts can seem small. The UN’s 2026 Sustainable Development Goals Report offers some encouragement. Since 2015, nearly one billion people have gained access to safely managed drinking water, 1.2 billion have gained access to safely managed sanitation, and new HIV infections have fallen by 30%. Electricity now reaches 92% of the world’s population, internet access has grown from 40% to 74%, and social protection covers more than half the world’s population.

This progress tells us that change is possible when investment, good policies, cooperation and persistence come together. But the work is far from finished. Only 36% of the Sustainable Development Goal targets with enough data are currently on track or making moderate progress. Nearly half are moving too slowly, and 15% have actually gone backwards. The UN’s message is simple: we need to scale up what works. The call is to recognize what is already bearing fruit, and help it grow beyond the numbers it currently reaches.

God, we lift up a nation grappling with deep tragedy, violence, and heartbreak. Be near to those carrying unbearable grief, trauma, and the agony of sudden loss. Grant wisdom, discernment, and integrity to judges, juries, and public servants tasked with carrying out justice in complex and painful circumstances. Guide us all toward greater compassion, systemic protection for the vulnerable, and paths that lead to peace.
