Justice Prayers - May 7, 2025

“For we are the temple of the living God. As God has said: “I will live with them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be my people.” - 2 Corinthians 6:16 (NIV)
Bangladesh
Bangladesh’s garment industry, which employs over four million workers, mostly women, has been a cornerstone of the country's economic rise. After the 2013 Rana Plaza tragedy that killed 1,100 workers, the industry made significant strides in safety and sustainability. Today, the average Bangladeshi has become better off than the average citizen of India. However, U.S. imposed tariffs threaten to unravel this progress. Even a 10% tariff on Bangladeshi exports could devastate the low-margin industry, crippling livelihoods and stalling national development. The looming trade pressures and seeming disregard of their plight by political leaders, expose the vulnerability of labour-driven economies in global politics. This is a justice issue rooted in economic inequality, global power imbalances, and the dignity of vulnerable workers.
Dear God, We lift up Bangladesh’s garment workers, and all garment workers world-wide, especially women, whose livelihoods hang in the balance of global politics. Stir global leaders toward fair trade policies that honour the labour and lives of the world’s poorest. We pray that we, as consumers, will be mindful of where our garments come from. Give us conscious compassion, stewardship, and wisdom in our own fiscal responsibilities.
Russia
The Russian government under Vladimir Putin is reshaping its education system to promote patriotism and loyalty to the state. New mandatory classes like “Conversations About Important Things” deliver propaganda about national pride and support for government policies, especially around the war in Ukraine. Teachers are under pressure to align with state messaging, and students are expected to conform. Despite these efforts, many educators and parents resist, highlighting the resilience of individuals committed to preserving independent thought. This situation underscores the importance of grassroots initiatives and the endurance of the human spirit in the face of authoritarian measures.
Dear God, how can we escape life in the fishbowl of water we swim in? We are prone to believe and think like the powers that shape us. Thank you for your Holy Spirit which defies human will and changes our hearts, guiding us towards love, justice, and community. Send your Spirit to Russia and all places where authorities seek to promote narratives that elevate one nation above another. Holy Spirit, have your way, and may God’s Kingdom and its values continue to grow regardless and even because of suppression.
Turkey
The international community’s silence on Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu’s arrest and Turkey’s ensuing crackdown on peaceful protests is deeply troubling. President Erdoğan’s regime has responded to civilian protests with mass arrests that include demonstrators, journalists and the lawyers who choose to defend them. Public gatherings have been banned and the use of social media has been restricted. Despite being aware of these violations of rights and freedoms, democratic governments have only offered muted criticism. The EU and UN have expressed concern but have taken no action. This passivity enables authoritarianism, erodes global human rights credibility, and abandons Turkish citizens fighting for democracy and justice.
God we pray for Turkey and for all imprisoned for speaking up for justice and transparency. Strengthen the hearts of peaceful protestors, journalists, and lawyers who are courageously seeking truth. We also ask for a stronger international response to uphold democratic values world wide. Mobilize and empower agencies like the EU and the UN to stand up to intimidation and fear mongering, and use their collective influence to confront injustice at its roots.
