World Renew Seeks Prayers for Evacuees of British Columbia Fires

As it prepares a response to the effects of the dozens of wildfires raging in British Columbia, World Renew asks for prayers for all who have been forced to leave their homes.

According to National Public Radio, the fires broke out nearly two weeks ago in an area northeast of Vancouver.

Since then, more than 40,000 people have been evacuated, including residents of Williams Lake, home to Cariboo Community Christian Reformed Church, and officials have declared a state of emergency in the province. Some 3,000 firefighters are currently at work.

Mike Hoyer, World Renew Disaster Response Services (DRS) area representative for British Columbia, reports that several organizations, provincial agencies, and other disaster response organizations are caring for the needs of evacuees.

“There are many details to work out, but a major area World Renew focuses on is making sure the most vulnerable fire survivors receive care,” said Hoyer.

“Many affected by the wildfires probably have insurance to help with their recovery, but those who don’t will need extra assistance down the road, long after the fires have died out. These are the individuals and families World Renew seeks to help,” said Hoyer.

World Renew is connecting with local government and nonprofit response efforts in British Columbia to begin planning for long-term disaster recovery.

“Many people in B.C. are springing into action to come to the aid of their fellow citizens living in the fire-stricken British Columbia interior. Cariboo Community CRC in Williams Lake, as well as other individuals and churches, is providing food and support to firefighters, emergency personnel, and evacuees,” said John Vanderhoek, a World Renew ambassador in British Columbia.

Bob Larmen, director of World Renew DRS, added: “World Renew is and will continue to work with churches, individuals, and organizations in British Columbia who are affected by and/or responding to these fires.

Paul Lomavatu, pastor of Cariboo Community, said,
“The firefighters, emergency response teams, police, and volunteers are responding superbly to this crisis. We are so thankful for their presence.”

He asks for prayers “for their safety, and the renewing of their strength. Pray for wisdom, guidance, and discernment in setting priorities, developing strategies to deal with the fires, and the organization and mobilizing of people and resources.”
