Rev. Darren Roorda, Canadian Ministries Director for the Christian Reformed Church, attended the National Prayer Breakfast in Ottawa on May 19 as a representative of the CRCNA, together with Rev. Anthony Elenbaas of Immanuel CRC in Hamilton, Ontario.

The National Prayer Breakfast is offered each year by the Speakers of the Senate and the House of Commons of Canada’s Parliament as a way of gathering national leaders to pray together in an ecumenical setting.

“After sitting for a while around the breakfast table with a number of leaders in other ecumenical traditions, we were given the privilege of hearing scripture read by members of the three main parties within the Canadian system (Liberal, Conservative and New Democratic Party), including Prime Minister Trudeau,” said Roorda of the event.

While he and Elenbaas appreciated the chance to be the voice of the CRCNA in a national setting, Roorda said, “We both agreed that the name of Jesus was sadly nearly absent.”
