Remembering Jerry Dykstra
Gerard “Jerry” Dykstra, former executive director of the Christian Reformed Church in North America and a longtime pastor, passed away Apr. 27, 2026, after a long battle with health challenges. A memorial service will be held May 30 at Christ’s Community Church in Glendale, Ariz.
Born in Holland, Mich., Dykstra was the son of a Christian Reformed pastor, Louis Dykstra, both of whom served the denomination in extensive capacities.
Jerry and his wife attended Calvin College, graduating in 1970. Following college, he built a successful business career in California before sensing a call into ministry later in life.
He returned to Grand Rapids, Mich., to study at Calvin Theological Seminary, earning a master of divinity degree. Over the years, he served several Christian Reformed congregations, including churches in Cascade, Mich., and Walnut Creek, Calif.
Dykstra later transitioned into denominational leadership, serving as director of denominational ministries before being appointed executive director of the CRCNA in 2006. During his tenure, he helped to guide the denomination through a season of organizational transition and ministry development. He served as executive director until 2011.
Those who knew Dykstra remembered him for his thoughtful leadership, pastoral heart, and commitment to serving the church. His obituary describes him as “a servant leader in every sense: generous with his time, steady with his wisdom, and always ready with guidance.”
He is survived by his wife and family members and is remembered by many colleagues and church members who served with him in ministry and leadership over the years.
