New CD Features Psalms

August 6, 2012

Several songs from the recently released songbook Psalms for All Seasons: A Complete Psalter for Worship are featured on a new, 20-track CD performed by Princeton Theological Seminary’s touring choir.

The songbook, featuring some 800 psalms settings, was published earlier this year by Faith Alive Christian Resources, the publishing agency of the Christian Reformed Church, Baker Publishing Group, and the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship.

Titled Sing Praises to the Lord!, the new CD is a colloration between the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship and Princeton Theological Seminary.

A few tracks on the CD were recorded live at a psalm-singing festival in the fall of 2011.

All other tracks were recorded in Miller Chapel by members of the 2011-2012 Princeton Seminary Touring Choir expressly for this CD collection.

Tracks on the CD include performances of “The Lord is My Light,” “Hear My Cry, O God, and Save Me,” and  “While I Keep Silence.”

“We hope that together they may inspire and teach new ways of singing and praying psalms in worship,” says a story about the CD on the website of the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship.

The CD, as well as the songbook itself, arise out of and nurture the Reformed faith, say those who have worked on the projects.

But the new songbook is also designed so that congregations in a spectrum of denominations can find many settings of familiar psalms that fit their approach to worship. There are also other psalm settings they can learn and use.

Martin Tel, director of music at Princeton Theological Seminary, writes about the breath and beauty of the psalms.

“We address God and listen to God; we cry, complain, and confess; we give thanks, praise, and honor; we offer and receive blessing," he writes.
