Justice Prayers - September 10, 2025

September 10, 2025

He has shown you, O people, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

Micah 6:8

Sudan's Silent War

As we pray for raging wars and nations under siege, let us not forget Sudan. Since April 2023, violent conflict between rival military factions has devastated Khartoum and spread across the country, displacing millions. Entire communities have been uprooted, civilians face famine, and health systems have collapsed. Refugees pour into already fragile neighbors like Chad and South Sudan, while aid workers risk their lives to deliver relief. Yet this immense crisis receives little global attention. Unlike Ukraine or Gaza, Sudan holds fewer economic or strategic interests for Western powers, and its complex story struggles to break through media noise. The silence itself reveals an injustice: when the vulnerable suffer without global outrage while these (roughly 8 million) African lives are perishing.

Father of all nations, we pray for Sudan and an end to the terrible violence.  May the call for peace and a way forward reveal itself. We pray for peace negotiations and we pray that the global community may rise to respond with compassion, resources, and advocacy for justice, safety, and restoration in Sudan.

Human Trafficking and Exploitation

Human trafficking remains one of the gravest global injustices, ensnaring over 25 million people in forced labor, sexual exploitation, and modern slavery. Victims are often the poor, displaced, or marginalized, deceived by false promises of work or opportunity. Traffickers profit from hidden networks across borders, preying on vulnerability. Exploitation occurs in agriculture, construction, domestic service, and the sex trade, affecting women, men, and children alike.

Father in heaven, we pray for the exposure of trafficking rings, courage for governments and communities to act decisively, and resilience for organizations offering rescue and rehabilitation. We pray for freedom for the oppressed, restoration for survivors, and global determination to end modern slavery.

Indigenous Land Restoration in Canada

A recent Indigenous land claim at Sauble Beach, Ontario corrected what may seem to some like a “small” survey error concerning a 2.2 km stretch of shoreline. But for the Saugeen First Nation, this “small” correction marks a justice win nearly 170 years in the making. After decades of legal battles, Canadian courts confirmed that this land rightfully belongs to the Saugeen. For the Saugeen, the decision is restorative: ancestral rights are finally upheld, cultural and spiritual ties to sacred shorelines acknowledged, authority reclaimed to steward fragile dunes and habitats, and economic opportunity returned through tourism. This “small” story reflects a broader truth: even “small” oversights of injustice can echo for generations, and the struggle to properly recognize Indigenous rights remains deeply challenging in Canadian society.

Creator God, we pray for continued healing and humility on the path of reconciliation.  We pray that “small” changes made by Canadian lawmakers would err on the side of justice, and that Canadian hearts and minds would bend to your shalom - the flourishing of all creatures and creation.

Becoming (part of) the Answer to our Own Prayers

Prayer Vigil for Immigrant Churches

The Christian Reformed Church is inviting all congregations and members to join a virtual prayer vigil tonight, Wednesday, September 10 at 7:00 p.m. EST. This will be a time to hear stories and prayer requests directly from members of CRC congregations who are experiencing challenges as a result of the increased immigration enforcement activities taking place across the United States.
