Justice Prayers - May 6, 2026

May 6, 2026
A river rushing through a forest

Yet the Lord longs to be gracious to you;
therefore he will rise up to show you compassion.
For the Lord is a God of justice.
Blessed are all who wait for him!
- Isaiah 30:18

AI Centers in North America

The NY Times recently featured a reporter video and Abacus Data in Canada reports similarly on the growing tensions surrounding construction of massive AI centers. The tensions involve concerns for environmental impact and also mistrust around political motivations.

AI centers are being built across North America in remote agricultural areas with buildings taking up a sprawling 250 acres of space. The construction zones and heavy machinery, the electrical and water input required, and the disturbance of existing community populations, ecosystems, and lifestyle all play into differences of opinion.

More troubling is that local citizens' voices seem to count the least in these decisions. In a rapidly changing world, so much is still unknown. Wisdom dictates a slow pace and consultation processes, and democracy requires education and agency.

We pray for wisdom regarding the future of AI in our world. God, lead us forward and through, and may your hand of justice for land, animals, and people be upon our proceedings.

Methane Gas Emissions in Chile

A Reuters report from the UN’s environment program revealed the Lomas Los Colorados landfill in Chile tops the list for the world's highest levels of ‌methane emissions. The landfill sits about 37 miles north of Santiago and receives waste from more than 7 million people. The trash heap produces 102,667 metric tons of methane each year, an estimated equivalent to emissions from 2 million cars driven annually.

Reuters reports that most of the methane is produced from food scraps and organic waste. They also reported that since 2007, the site has worked to capture methane gas to fuel a local power station as part of a biogas program.

Composting organic waste and capturing and recycling methane gas present as hopeful interventions. Methane gas traps heat in the atmosphere, and is a huge contributor to global warming and climate change.

God of the environment and all things. We pray for deliberative and steady action to reduce harmful methane gas emissions. Thank you for reports and initiatives that spur on environmentally conscious and stewardly decisions.

US and Iran War

US foreign policy in the Middle East appears to be entering a heightened and uncertain phase. Reports indicate that President Trump announced an initiative "Project Freedom" on May 4, intending to guide commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz and restore shipping.

In response Iran reportedly responded with counterproposals aimed at de-escalations, including the withdrawal of U.S. forces, the lifting of sanctions, and war reparations. President Trump has stated that the Iranian proposal is "not acceptable," signaling that it does not meet U.S. demands, particularly regarding nuclear weapons.

Armed forces on all sides remain on high alert and tensions are high over the legality and implications of what’s currently on the table.

God of lowly folk born in mangers, we pray for our political leaders and political tensions. God who restored the ear of a Roman soldier during your own arrest, we pray that wisdom would cry out in the offices and courtrooms of our nations. Help us to remember our humanity, our limits, and our life in service to your ways. Preserve life for our planet and people.
