Justice Prayers - June 4, 2025

June 4, 2025

Lord, You meet us where we are,

whether we rejoice or mourn.

Help us to meet one another there too.

The Colossians Forum

USA Supreme Court

There are many crucial decisions being undertaken in the USA at the Supreme Court level right now, including rulings on presidential immunity, immigration policy, gun laws, financial aid, and the reach of federal power. These cases not only challenge and test the resilience of the American Constitution, but also physically and mentally challenge legal personnel, judges, and government officials who are responsible for interpreting, negotiating, and implementing law and order. The weight of these responsibilities calls for discernment, accountability, and a deep commitment to justice and the common good.

We lift up the U.S. Supreme Court and all lawmakers. Grant wisdom to discern truth over politics, courage to uphold justice over partisanship, and humility to guard liberty for all. May decisions reflect integrity and fairness, preserving the principles of democracy as found in the U.S. Constitution. We pray that all law and decision makers will work to promote peace and human flourishing. Lord, may Your will be done.

Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA

In 1921, Tulsa’s Greenwood neighbourhood was known as “Black Wall Street” for its thriving Black-owned businesses and wealth. It was devastated by one of the most horrific acts of racial violence in U.S. history. Over two days, a coordinated, military-style attack by white citizens destroyed 1,250 homes and 35 blocks, leaving deep scars of trauma and poverty on its black residents. This massacre entrenched economic, educational, and health disparities for generations. Tulsa’s newly launched initiative the “Road to Repair” is aimed to address and heal these long-lasting inequalities including a housing fund for homeownership and housing assistance; a cultural preservation fund for building improvements and cleaning up blight; and support for land acquisition, small business grants and scholarships. By working with legal teams, community groups, and descendants, the project seeks to restore what was lost.

We thank You for the depth of understanding demonstrated by “The Road to Repair” -  the understanding of how violence and destruction of the past can create lasting pathways of poverty, injustice and barriers for future generations. We thank you for elected leaders that have courage to confront these realities and work toward healing. May their efforts bring justice, restoration and hope to the residents of Tulsa. Furthermore, may this act of truth and reconciliation be a model for Canada and other nations that must confront, repent, and provide compensation to victims of past injustices in order to promote reconciliation.

Wildfires in Canada

Canada is currently grappling with a severe wildfire crisis. The provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta are the most affected, leading to the evacuation of thousands of people. The fires have generated massive smoke plumes and have deteriorated air quality across Canada and parts of the United States. Indigenous communities are disproportionately impacted by these wildfires due to the remote locations of many communities, limited infrastructure, and historically minimal firefighting support. Forest fires threaten not only immediate safety, but also creates lasting impacts of poverty through loss of sustenance, employment, and housing.

We pray for the people of Canada, the land, and the animals, as they endure out of control wildfires. We pray for rain. We pray for provision. We pray, God, that you would continue to work to preserve life in all its forms. And may we as your people heed and follow your example.

Glacier Collapse

In an unprecedented event, nine million tonnes of rock and ice from the Kleines Nesthorn mountain collapsed, obliterating the Swiss village of Blatten. The catastrophic landslide, triggered by a melting glacier, wiped out the 800-year-old village, leaving behind a vast expanse of debris. Nearly all 300 residents had been evacuated, though one man remains missing. The disaster highlights the increasing instability of alpine environments due to climate change, with experts warning of more such events globally as glaciers and permafrost continue to melt. Blatten's community is grappling with immense loss, carrying the village's memory as they contemplate an uncertain future.

God of creation, we come to you with heavy hearts for the village of Blatten, swallowed by the mountain's collapse. We pray for the missing man and comfort for those who lost everything—homes, memories, history. In this devastating loss, we ask for strength for the community. As we see glaciers recede and collapse help us adapt to an ever changing world. Amen.

Welcome New and Returning Leaders to Canada’s 45th Parliament

As the 45th Canadian Parliament opens this month, we want to extend a message of gratitude to our new and returning government leaders, thanking and encouraging them for taking up the challenge of service for public good, justice and reconciliation. Romans 13 calls governing authorities to be God’s servants for our good. As people of hope and the gospel, we want to encourage them in this role, and emphasize the need for companionship and cooperation when working on important issues. Greet your MP today!
