Justice Prayers - July 16, 2025

July 16, 2025

Stalwart walks in step with God; his path blazed by God, he’s happy. If he stumbles, he’s not down for long; God has a grip on his hand. - Psalm 27:23-24 (MSG)

Civil War in Sudan

More than two years have past since the beginning of Sudan’s brutal civil war. Before the war erupted in April 2023, Sudan was already experiencing a severe humanitarian crisis that left 15.8 million people in need of humanitarian aid. Two years of war have gravely exacerbated these conditions, displacing over 12 million people and leaving 30.4 million people - more than half of Sudan’s population - in need of humanitarian support. In Darfur, reports of ethnic cleansing and sexual violence are increasing. Thousands have fled into neighbouring countries while others are trapped in war zones without food, water, or safety. The conflict between the army and the paramilitary RSF is deeply rooted in political power struggles, but civilians, especially women and children, bear the cost. The international community has remained mostly silent, and this is rarely reported in our news sources.  However, the human casualties of this war are staggering.

God of mercy, We remember Sudan - its children, its hunger, its cries.  Where violence reigns, bring peace. Break open hard hearts and move the powerful. Restore what has been broken and redeem what is lost. God of compassion, end this war.

Canada’s Wildfires and Indigenous Stewardship

This summer, wildfires continue to devastate large swaths of Canada, especially in British Columbia, Alberta, the Prairies and the North. Indigenous communities are again on the frontlines, evacuating land, fighting fires, and suffering disproportionate loss. These lands have been stewarded for generations with deep wisdom and respect for the earth. Yet climate change, colonial policies, and underinvestment have made them increasingly vulnerable. The fires also remind us of a larger ecological emergency and the urgent call to care for creation.

Creator God, The earth groans and forests burn. We lift up Indigenous communities displaced and grieving. Forgive our climate apathy. Kindle in us a fire for justice.  Teach us to walk gently on this land. Amen.

Migrant Deaths at the Mexico / US Border

The number of Mexican migrants dying while attempting to cross into the U.S. has more than doubled in 2025. In just four months, 181 deaths have been reported, compared to 81 in the same period last year. Harsh border policies and militarization have shut down traditional pathways to asylum, forcing vulnerable people to risk deadly crossings through deserts, mountains, and oceans. Migrant advocates report a rise in human smuggling as opportunistic networks exploit this desperation. Soaring summer heat also has made migration more deadly.  The situation is deeply complex, yet the heartbreaking reality remains: each statistic represents a life lost.

Christ who was once a refugee, draw near to the suffering on our borders. Shield the desperate from death and soften political hearts. Break up drug cartels and all crime rings who profit from human suffering.  Let your church be sanctuary, not only in words but also in actions.

Disability and Accessibility Survey

Every church has people with disabilities in it. The question is not if they are there. The question is whether or not people with disabilities are experiencing belonging. Thrive has created a tool for church leaders to invite your congregation to complete a disability and accessibility survey and help you understand how your church is doing. Request your church-specific survey link to get started.
