Justice Prayers - February 26, 2025

February 26, 2025

The Lord will keep you from all harm—

    he will watch over your life;

 the Lord will watch over your coming and going

    both now and forevermore.

Psalm 121:7-8

Persecution in Somalia

In Somalia extreme Islamist militants, particularly al-Shabab who is at war with the government, seek to eliminate Christianity.  Al-Shabab has gained control of large swaths of land in Somalia and enforces an extreme view of Islam, enforcing strict Sharia law, and often executing Christians on sight. Persecution also comes from family and community, where leaving Islam is seen as a deep betrayal. Even suspicion of conversion can result in house arrest, forced marriage, coerced Islamic practices, or death. Christianity is almost entirely underground, with secret believers living in constant fear. Despite these dangers, Somali Christians continue to follow Jesus, relying on God’s strength in the face of extreme opposition.

Father, we pray for peace in Somalia and we lift up our brothers and sisters there who follow You in secret. Let them feel Your presence deeply. Protect them from the threats of al-Shabab and those who seek to harm them. Give parents wisdom and courage as they teach their children about Jesus. Strengthen their faith, fill them with hope, and remind them of Your unshakable love. Amen.

CRCNA Position on Climate Care

At Synod 2012, the Christian Reformed Church of North America recognized human-induced climate change as an ethical, social justice, and religious issue. It affirmed biblical stewardship principles and called for sustainable living, advocacy for justice, and wise energy use. The church urged members to reduce energy consumption, promote environmental responsibility, and support policies that protect creation and the vulnerable. Despite scientific uncertainties, Synod emphasized the need for action, encouraging congregations to be public examples of stewardship and to seek justice for future generations. The decision reinforced the denomination’s commitment to honouring God through responsible care of His creation.

Heavenly Father, help us love the world as You do. Remind us that we are stewards, not owners, of Your creation. Give us wisdom, courage, and strength to care for the earth, its creatures, and one another. May we be bold advocates and faithful examples of creation care for future generations. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza

Stage one of the ceasefire in Gaza is underway however its full implementation remains uncertain. The ceasefire commenced January 19 and had originally planned for three 6-week long stages: Stage one, a full ceasefire, hostage and prisoner exchange, Israeli troop withdrawals, and increased aid. Stage two, a permanent ceasefire and full Israeli withdrawal, and Stage three focusing on recovering deceased hostages and rebuilding Gaza. However, tensions remain high as Israel’s far-right leaders push for war to resume, and Hamas may withhold hostages. Trump’s proposal to relocate Palestinians and give the U.S. control of Gaza has added tensions, facing rejection from Arab nations.

Lord, we cry out for peace in Gaza. Protect the innocent, bring freedom to the captives, and heal those who suffer. Strengthen the hostages released, restoring their bodies and spirits after months of trauma and sustain those still being held. Soften hearts, guide leaders toward justice, and let Your mercy bring lasting peace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
