Shannen’s Dream

Fourteen year-old Shannen Koostachin had a dream that kids in her community, a remote reserve in northern Ontario, could one day go to school in safe, comfy schools. Motivated to see change in her community and equal education for First Nation people, she wrote a letter to a Member of Parliament. Often the marginalized are labeled as voiceless, but Shannen proves this false. Six years after Shannen began her brave campaign Attawapiskat’s new school was built. The campaign, Shannen’s Dream, continues today to fight for equal education that allows First Nation youth to achieve their dreams and be proud of their culture.
