State Proclamation Honors CRC Schools
Calvin University and Calvin Theological Seminary marked a historic milestone during their 150th anniversary homecoming celebration on Saturday, Sept. 27, 2025, with the presentation of a proclamation from Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist II of the State of Michigan. The proclamation formally recognized both institutions’ 150 years of service as leaders in Christian higher education in Michigan.
In addition to the governor’s proclamation, State of Michigan senators Mark Huizenga and Winnie Brinks presented Calvin University and Calvin Theological Seminary with a special tribute from the Michigan Legislature. The moment carried added significance as both Huizenga and Brinks are alumni of Calvin’s class of 1990—the same graduating class as Calvin University president Greg Elzinga.
At halftime during Calvin’s first-ever Homecoming football game, Huizenga presented the official proclamation and legislative tribute to Elzinga and to Calvin Theological Seminary president Jul Medenblik.
“This recognition from our state’s leaders is a powerful reminder of Calvin’s enduring impact on Michigan and beyond,” said Elzinga. “To celebrate this milestone alongside classmates and fellow alumni serving in public office makes this moment even more meaningful.”
“For 150 years, the seminary has been dedicated to equipping pastors, scholars, and ministry leaders to serve the church and the world,” said Medenblik. “Receiving this honor together with the university highlights our shared history and our continued commitment to advancing Christ-centered education for future generations.”
The proclamation and tribute highlighted the institutions’ combined contributions to Michigan’s intellectual, cultural, and spiritual life since their founding in 1876. Together, Calvin University and Calvin Theological Seminary have prepared thousands of students and leaders who serve in education, ministry, business, government, health care, and the arts.
The anniversary recognition was part of a weekend-long celebration that brought together alumni, students, faculty, staff, and community members. Festivities included campus gatherings, athletic events, and opportunities to reflect on the institutions’ rich history while envisioning a vibrant future.
“Receiving these honors from the governor, lieutenant governor, and members of the legislature affirms Calvin’s lasting role in shaping the next generation of leaders,” said Elzinga. “It is a fitting way to celebrate 150 years of God’s faithfulness to our community.”
