Cambodian Student Fights Human Trafficking

In Cambodia, migration is a reality for many families. According to the United Nations, approximately 1.3 million Cambodians work abroad, often because job opportunities are scarce at home. But while leaving the country can seem like their only option, many young people are unaware of the risks, making them vulnerable to exploitation and human trafficking.

For 17-year-old Chhet, that perspective began to change when she discovered a Youth Countering People Trafficking (YCPT) club at her school, facilitated by World Renew’s local partner, KADRA.

A bright and active student at her high school, Chhet was curious when she heard about the club and decided to join. She hoped to learn more about migration and to play a more active role in Cambodian society.

Through the club’s activities, Chhet’s understanding deepened. She came to realize that what she once saw as a “normal” part of life is filled with hidden risks. From traffickers targeting vulnerable youth to predators stalking travelers who seek opportunities abroad, migration carries dangers she had never considered before.

But the YCPT club gave Chhet more than just knowledge. She discovered her own leadership potential. She built confidence, learned how to work in a team, and found her voice.

Reflecting on what she gained, she said, “I would like to share my knowledge with other young people. I want to encourage them to study hard and treasure themselves.”

Today Chhet serves as a facilitator in the YCPT club, passing along to her peers what she has learned. She is proud to help others think carefully about their futures and avoid the traps of unsafe migration.

Chhet is deeply thankful for KADRA’s role in bringing YCPT to her school. 

“It has provided us with access to new knowledge, particularly on how to conduct community research focusing on safe migration and on the danger of human trafficking,” she shared. “I hope that KADRA will continue its training support, and on behalf of the club members I would like to wish KADRA and World Renew peace, happiness, and success in their work.”

Around the world, World Renew is equipping young people to stand up against injustices such as human trafficking, child marriage, and discrimination. Through youth groups and leadership programs, World Renew is helping students like Chhet to create positive change—building safer, more hopeful communities for the next generation.
