Deadly Earthquakes Devastate Venezuela
Two powerful earthquakes have struck central-northern Venezuela, leaving widespread devastation and significant humanitarian needs across the region.
On June 24, 2026, earthquakes measuring magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 impacted densely populated areas including La Guaira, Caracas, Miranda, Carabobo, and Yaracuy. La Guaira has been identified as the most severely affected area, with extensive destruction reported.
At least 920 people have died and more than 3,360 people have been injured, with casualty figures expected to rise as search-and-rescue operations continue. Over 214 aftershocks have been recorded, further increasing fear and instability for affected families.
Critical infrastructure has been significantly disrupted, including electricity and water systems, telecommunications, public transportation such as the Caracas Metro, and operations at Maiquetía International Airport. The Government of Venezuela has declared a state of emergency and activated national response efforts.
Thousands of people are now without safe shelter or reliable access to basic services. Communities are facing heightened risks, including displacement, limited access to clean water and sanitation, strain on health facilities, and the psychological impact of continued aftershocks. The United Nations estimates that up to 6.76 million people could be affected by the earthquakes, including up to two million in Caracas, the capital.
World Renew is actively monitoring the situation and working with partners to assess how best to respond to the most urgent needs on the ground. Guided by local relationships and a commitment to serving the most vulnerable, early response efforts are expected to focus on emergency shelter, essential relief supplies, and support for affected communities.
“Earthquakes like these can leave families without homes, access to care, or a sense of safety,” said Garry Mayhew, Head of Humanitarian and Emergency Affairs at World Renew. “Our priority is to come alongside communities and local partners to provide practical support, comfort, and hope in the midst of crisis. At the same time, we are working carefully to avoid duplicating the efforts of other humanitarian organizations—moving quickly but thoughtfully—to ensure we can share Christ’s hope with as many of the most vulnerable survivors as possible.”
As the situation continues to unfold, World Renew is calling on supporters to pray and give to help meet urgent humanitarian needs and ensure a timely, effective response.
