Beyond the Headlines
Jesus had a remarkable ability to shift the common narrative (“You have heard it said . . .”) into surprising and often uncomfortable directives (“But I tell you . . .”—see Matt. 5:21-48). In a time when daily news cycles are marked by division, fear, and complexity, many of us are asking, “How do we follow Jesus in the middle of so much noise?” A new binational justice education series, Beyond the
Headlines: Faith, Community, and the
Stories That Shape Us,” offers an intentional, hope-filled space to listen deeply, think theologically, and respond faithfully.
Thrive, World Renew, and the Christian Reformed Centre for Public Dialogue have partnered to create this four-part online webinar series for people of faith in Canada and the United States. Designed especially for church members, leaders, and justice advocates, Beyond the Headlines invites participants to move past overwhelming headlines and polarizing narratives toward a biblically grounded understanding of justice rooted in God’s redemptive work in the world.
Each session focuses on one key justice issue while also revealing how deeply interconnected the issues are. Rather than offering quick answers, the series explores how the stories we are told (and sometimes tell ourselves) shape our responses to injustice. Participants will be encouraged to identify and challenge harmful myths, uncover systemic and structural root causes, and reflect theologically on God’s call to love our neighbors and to seek the flourishing of all creation.
The series begins Apr. 30 with “Immigration and Refugee Justice: Stories, Systems, and the Call to Welcome,” followed by “Food Justice: Food as a Right, Flourishing for All” on May 12. After a summer pause, the series will resume with “Climate Justice: Creation Care, Global Neighbors, and a Just Transition” on Sept. 15, and it will conclude with “Gender Justice: Flourishing, Power, and Faithful Community” on Nov. 17. Each session takes place at 7:30 p.m. (ET) and stands alone, making it easy to participate in one or all sessions.
For communities seeking to engage today’s justice challenges with wisdom, humility, and hope, Beyond the Headlines offers a timely and faithful invitation.
More information and registration details are available for each session.
