Ten years ago Prairie City Christian Reformed Church had to make a tough decision. Should they close their doors or start the long journey toward renewal?

The decision they made changed the church and the broader community of Prairie City, Iowa.

Led by Norm Thomasma from the CRC’s Pastor-Church Relations office, the congregation spent several months discussing the future of the church.

The congregation evaluated its ministries, effectiveness, and commitment to the gospel.

Staying open, they realized, would require deep-seeded honesty and commitment.

“This hard look at the failings and the strengths brought our church to the foot of the cross and the need for Jesus in every aspect of our lives, even religion,” says Pastor Matthew McClure.

They decided to remain open and start on the road toward revival.

Since then, Prairie City CRC has changed direction, and God has been moving through a number of new ministries that have touched many people.

Financial Peace Courses are provided at the church building, offering a chance for individuals and families to find peace in the midst of financial crisis.

Through these courses “God has set many free from the bondage of living paycheck to paycheck,” says McClure.

In addition, charity funds have recently grown as members of the congregation seek to aid those who are struggling financially.

Another event that the church hosts is an art show for local artists in the month of January, a dreary winter month when an art show is a good way to bring new joy and life to community members, says McClure.

Painting, sculpture, and photography are  a few of the types of work that are featured.

McClure says the church is flourishing because God is once again at the center. Visitors and returning members alike notice a new warmth and welcoming spirit.

“The testimony I want to share is how Prairie City Christian Reformed Church came to be a place where we can love everyone who walks through that door. The reason is God,” says McClure.
