God Fills a 'Deep Pit' in Mexico

Ben Meyer, a Christian Reformed World Missions missionary serving in Mexico, received a troubling  phone call from a church elder named Lalo.

“A woman from the church wants to know if we can meet with the son of her friend,” Lalo told Meyer. “She says he’s bewitched, under a spell.”

A few hours later, Meyer met Ricardo (not his real name) for the first time. It turned out that this young man was not bewitched, but severely depressed.

Ricardo shared his troubling story, describing how his sins led him to great suffering. How he has gone through the motions of empty religious rituals. How he feels like he is trapped in a “deep pit” and he was praying that God would take his life.

But God placed Ben Meyer and Lalo there to help Ricardo fill his “deep pit.”

Ricardo’s confessions resonated with Lalo, who once felt like he was practicing empty rituals, too.

“Ricardo, I’m sorry to have to tell you,” said Lalo, “but the things you are putting your faith in are not going to help you at all.”

Lalo and Meyer told Ricardo about trusting Jesus and the joy that comes with following him. And God used this message to reach Ricardo.

“Ricardo believed!” said Meyer. “He prayed, ‘Father God, you are my creator and I have sinned against you. I recognize that the only way to live in a right relationship with you is through Jesus.’”

A few days later, Meyer and Lalo watched in amazement as Ricardo stepped foot in church for the first time as a new believer. He didn’t come alone either. Ricardo invited his mother and 10 other people to the church as well.
