Why Water?
Did you know that diarrhea caused by lack of access to clean drinking water and poor hygiene is the second largest cause of death in children under age five? Did you know that children (mostly girls) spend hours a day walking and carrying water, preventing many of them from going to school? You can help.
A one-week campaign at your school could raise awareness and financial support for life changing water programs through CRWRC!
How it works:
- Dedicate one week during your school year for your Just Add Water campaign.
- Recruit volunteers to help you promote the event and organize a chapel service for before and after. Consider inviting a CRWRC staff member to speak.
- Set a monetary goal for your school.
- Buy or borrow a number of jerry cans that can hold at least 5 gallons of water.
- Promote your campaign by printing and distributing CRWRC’s “Just Add Water” posters around your school (e.g. near water fountains, taps, and bathrooms).
- Place a donation receptacle, such as an empty water cooler bottle, in a prominent location within your school.
- Mark off a 1 km route that students and staff can walk (e.g. around a school track, inside the school gym, or even in the local neighborhood).
- Launch your event with a school-wide chapel. Lead a time of devotion about Jesus being our Living Water, share some facts about the lack of clean water around the world, let people know the monetary goal that you’ve set, and encourage them to ask their friends, parents, and other family members to donate to the cause, explain the 1 km walk.
- During the week, have students walk the 1 km trail carrying 5 gallons of water. Explain to them that in the developing world, people (mostly girls) walk an average of 6 km a day to get water. They also carry an average of 20kg (44 lbs) of water. This task is carried out by girls as young as six years old.
- Consider asking students to get sponsors for a 6 km walk carrying water at the end of your event. Sponsors could pay $5 or $10 per kilometer for an average donation of $30 or $60.
- Hold a concluding chapel service to give people the results of your campaign. A CRWRC staff member could attend to receive the donation, thank students, and share a bit about the success of water programs around the world.
- Send some photos and a description of your event to kvanderberg@crwrc.org.
