Mali

The Scattered Ones: The Fulani of Mali (15 minutes/4:28 minutes) VHS and DVD
They are hard to reach. Over one million people, scattered across a land twice the size of Texas. Among them, hidden deep inside the culture of Islam, are the vanguard of God’s kingdom among these people.
These believers are the scattered ones of Mali.
So begins this story in a foreboding place. Wind whips in from the North bringing sand and echoes from ancient civilizations. Fulani tribesmen, nomads and masters at survival in one of the world’s harsher regions, practice their Muslim faith and cut out a living the best they can.
Some have voluntarily chosen to add several degrees of difficulty to their lives by walking away from Islam and into the arms of God through His son, Jesus Christ.
It’s not easy. The culture in Mali lives and breathes in rhythm with the Koran and the Mullahs. Life is lived in the shadows of the mosques.
To invite Jesus is to invite persecution.
Missionaries with Christian Reformed World Missions have chosen to identify with this land, this culture and this suffering. They offer hope and encouragement to those who, while embracing eternal life, also embrace temporal suffering.

China

Forbidden No More: the Story of Rugao, China (12 minutes/5 minutes)
Over 2,000 years ago, a Chinese emperor built a wall. Other emperors did too. What began as protection against the enemy became protection against neighbors. More walls were built and connected. In time, they became known as the Great Wall of China. In the heart of Beijing, China's capital, is the forbidden City. Massive walls protect this, the seat of ancient dynasties. Through the centuries, these walls have cultivated another wall: barriers in the mind against all things foreign. But walls have a way of coming down. Forbidden No More is the story of God's Word penetrating into China and the role the CRC played from 1920-1950, and the role our church is playing once again now that the Bamboo Curtain is falling. His gaze is directly west, eyes locked with the catholic cathedral on the other side of the water. Just near that cathedral are the halls of power. Halls that since 1959 have resounded with policy promoting communism, socialism and friendship with the former Soviet Union. And still, Jesus overseas it all. This is a place of incongruities. Perhaps the greatest incongruity is the Christian Reformed Church in Cuba. On this communist island, so close to Florida, a growing group of believers sink its roots deep and is having a profound impact on Cuban society. (2003)
