Embers to Flames

January 6, 2015

Hot embers of prayer, ready for a fresh wind of the Holy Spirit to ignite them into flames, are smoldering in Christian Reformed Church congregations, says Mary Sterenberg, Great Lakes Regional Prayer Mobilizer for the CRC.

Especially as a new year begins, people across the CRC may want to find ways to bolster or renew their prayer lives, she says.

In West Michigan specifically, people are invited to start the new year “fanning the hot coals and flames of prayer in your life and in the church” by taking part in 12 weeks of prayer training, says Sterenberg.

The training is called “Embers to Flames” and will take place every Monday from 7-9 p.m. starting Jan.12 and running through through March 23  in the Lodge Room 300 at Calvary CRC in Holland, Mich.

The sessions are  taught by prayer leaders Mary Swierenga, Ruth Veltkamp, and Sterenberg.

Here are some of the things persons who attended the Embers to Flames last winter have reported about the training:

“It was such a great balance of worship, teaching and prayer. I loved that we practiced what we were taught immediately afterward.”

“I attended this class with women from different churches and our relationship grew  through this prayer class and the opportunity to pray together as we were learning together.”

“I appreciate all the notes to take home. I take my notebook to other meetings and share the information with others.”

“The timing in the winter months was so beneficial to keep the fire in me alive during some dreary weather.”

“The training helped me to see how much God loves me and wants to have a close and intimate relationship with me. I learned a number of ways to practice my prayer life.”
