Synod 2017, the annual general assembly of the Christian Reformed Church, convened on June 9 with worship in the DeVos gymnasium at Trinity Christian College in Palos Heights, Illinois.

The opening service was led by Rev. Drew Brown, pastor at Crossroads Community Christian Reformed Church in Schererville, Indiana. Recalling his trials to remain “king” of the playground in sixth grade, and quoting from Dr. Seuss’ Yertle the Turtle, Brown encouraged delegates to remember that their focus this week should be on God’s kingdom not their own priorities.

The service also included times of praise and worship led by members of Crossroads Community CRC, the convening church for this year’s synod.

Following worship, delegates moved into the business of synod, electing officers for the week.
