Ordinary People to Pray for Extraordinary Things

February 17, 2016

The third annual Alberta North Prayer Summit is fixing its focus on the worship and prayer of ordinary people.

This special day of prayer is open to anyone who wants to pray, worship, and learn more about prayer as well as enjoy some good food and fellowship with one another. View a video about the summit, the theme of which is “Ordinary People … Praying.”

Throughout the Bible, there are multiple instances of God using ordinary people to further the kingdom. Shepherds, carpenters, and fishermen are all called into service by the Holy Spirit and dutifully follow the call without hesitation.

The theme of this year's event is drawn from James 5:17, which describes one of these instances and refers the prophet Elijah as, “An ordinary man like us.”

While ordinary, Elijah’s fervent prayers were answered powerfully by God. This prayer summit will explore the idea that with the help of the Holy Spirit ordinary people are not limited to ordinary things.

Occurring on Sunday, March 13, the event will take place in two locations.

At Trinity CRC in Edmonton, Pastor Jeffrey Hough from Angel Community Church in Muskegon, Mich. will be speaking and leading Prayer Labs such as Prayer and Healing, Basic How-to’s of Prayer, and Learning to Pray the Indigenous Way.

The alternative location will be in Lacombe and will be led by Leon Johnston, pastor of Wolf Creek Community Church in Lacombe. He will be leading the Prayer Lab entitled Prayer Practices for Ordinary People.

By encouraging and supporting regional and local prayer events like this one and more than a dozen others in the past few years, Home Missions seeks to revitalize churches and ignite a passion for prayer.

"We need to seek God's face," says Home Missions director Moses Chung. "Prayer is the key to unlock and release God's power."
