Help in the Midst of Famine in South Sudan

May 10, 2017

World Renew

South Sudan, the youngest nation in the world, is in the headlines today for the wrong reasons.

Severe hunger and famine are the words being used to describe its current reality.

Five million people are going to bed hungry and it is the weakest — the young children and the elderly — who are suffering most. The increasing number of deaths is proof of the severity of the crisis.

Conflict and violence have forced millions of South Sudanese families to leave their homes in search of safety with little more than the clothes on their back.

While they may have escaped, they walk straight towards another problem: hunger. As they leave their homes behind, families abandon the agricultural land that they depend on. With no land, families have no way of growing the food they require for survival.

World Renew and others have seen these devastating consequences coming. For the South Sudanese who have fled to Uganda, World Renew has built 770 communal latrines. Since March, World Renew is supporting a program in Koch county of South Sudan to prevent deaths from malnutrition. Mothers who have walked for miles with their malnourished children are able to receive assistance and therapeutic feeding for their children.

This is a beginning. But the crisis is only growing and we must expand our efforts.

Please pray for peace and give generously to feed and support families in crisis in South Sudan.
