On a visit to Rwanda this past September to make connections for ministry, four people from Oakdale Park Christian Reformed Church in Grand Rapids, Mich., took time to visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial outside the city of Kigali. Visiting the memorial, marking the 1994 massacre of as many as 500,000 people, was a deeply troubling experience.

CRC leader Colin Watson, Sr. opened the Friday, Oct. 26, meeting of a World Communion of Reformed Churches regional gathering in Georgetown, Guyana, with a Bible study focusing on the need for unity among God’s people. Having been born in Guyana, it was exciting for Watson to return and be invited to lead the Friday devotional study. He also had the chance to visit a place called Plastic City, a garbage-strewn area that wasn’t there when he lived in the country.

In her ministry, Rev. Mary Hulst preaches weekly, counsels and encourages others, and “jumps into a freezing-cold pond once a year.” Hulst is the campus chaplain at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Mich., where jumping into the Calvin Seminary pond in winter is an annual tradition. She was also recently announced as a keynote speaker for Inspire 2019, a gathering of Christian Reformed Church leaders planned for Aug. 1-3, 2019, in Windsor, Ont.
