On May 14, the United States Postal Service is increasing its rates, and also changing the way it calculates postage for individual items. Now, the shape and size of a mailed piece determines its rate class.
Simple first-class letter envelopes increase from $0.39 to $0.41 for the first ounce, but then just $0.17 for each additional ounce up to 3.5 ounces. If the envelope weighs more than 3.5 ounces, it enters a new category: Flats.
A Flat includes envelopes weighing more than 3.5 ounces, or that are larger than 6.125" x 11.5". Postage for Flats costs $0.80 for the first ounce and $0.17 for each additional ounce, up to 13 ounces.
Postage for parcels will be priced based on size as well as weight and distance. There are other changes as well, including thickness limits. For more information, see www.usps.com and www.pb.com.
