Justice Congregational Song Contest

Congratulations to the winners of the Justice Song Contest:

First Prize
David Landegent - Holland, MI
Let Justice Roll Down, sung to the tune of "Let All Things Now Living"

Second Prize
Heather Jossellyn-Cranson - Orange City, IA
We Cannot Know What Worship Is, sung to the tune of "I Come with Joy to Meet My Lord"

Both songs are easy to include in a contemporary or traditional worship setting, and we hope they'll become part of your regular rotation as you seek to integrate themes of justice in worship. Let us know when you plan to sing them!

The Office of Social Justice, Reformed Worship, and the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship are pleased to announce a song contest on the topic of Justice. The search committee encourages submissions from CRC members representing varying ages, ethnicities, and worship styles.

New texts should be accompanied by a tune suggestion or newly composed tune. Consider working with another person or a small group and together reflect on social justice issues and compose a text together.

Texts will be judged on their theological and biblical accuracy, the way in which the issues are handled, fittingness for congregational worship, and effective use of language (i.e. quality of poetry, imagery).

If a text comes with a tune, the tune will be judged on its singability, musicality, and fittingness to the text. The selection committee may pair a winning text with an alternate tune.

Winning entries will be compiled by the Office of Social Justice, made available for download by churches and will be copyrighted by Faith Alive Christian Resources. The winning entries will also appear in Reformed Worship and links to the songs posted on all sponsors' websites.

$1,000 in prize money is available to be divided at the discretion of the contest sponsors among no more than 4 winning entries. For the first place winner, the CRC will match the prize amount if the winner chooses to put the winnings toward a one-week trip to visit the work of Association for a More Just Society in Tegucigalpa, Honduras.

Please submit two hard copies of the text and accompanying tune or a suggested tune with your contact information (including an email address if available) on a separate sheet of paper. A recording of the song as used within a worship setting would be appropriate to include though not required.

All submissions must be postmarked by October 1, 2009, with the final selection made by November 1, 2009.
