
Opportunity Title: Children Programs Assistant
Location: Ntcheu, Malawi

CRCNA Ministry Involved: CRWRC partner Save Orphans Ministries (SOM)
Time Commitment: approx. 12 weeks, plus reading, orientation and fundraising before departure
Dates Opportunities Are Available: late May 2009 – late August 2009
Application closing date: January 10, 2009
Purpose: Develop and demonstrate Cross-cultural competency, as well as develop basic community development skills and knowledge about integrated community-based program ministry. Assist SOM’s Evangelism Coordinator with monthly Bible Camps, weekly Kids Clubs and Community Based Child Care Centers (similar to pre-schools).
Specific Responsibilities:
1. learn local language, community and organizational cultures;
2. help SOM with their Kids Club, Bible Camps (similar to VBS) and Community Based Child Care Centers;
3. develop practical skills and knowledge of cross-cultural ministry;
4. participate and contribute in SOM’s management meetings, staff training, community planning sessions, and staff devotions;
5. complete weekly or monthly reports regarding work and meet regularly with mentor/supervisor.
Qualifications:
1. Mature Christian committed to serving Jesus Christ;
2. Some teaching experience with young children (more than Sunday School)
3. Be compassionate, respectful of other cultures;
4. Proactive and well organized; able to work with minimal supervision;
5. Flexible, adaptable and able to view life with a sense of humour;
6. Demonstrated interest in learning about Christian community development;
7. Commitment to CRWRC development values
8. Self-starter and able to work and guide own learning without constant on-site supervision;
9. Able and willing to work in a team setting;
10. Ability to invite others into his/her ministry through prayer and financial support;
11. Ability to work effectively while dealing with the ambiguity of adjusting to another culture;
12. Able and willing to learn about a different culture and language;
13. Good oral communication and writing skills;
14. Flexible, adaptable and able to view life with a sense of humor.
Financial Requirements of Volunteer:
Estimation of $6500 US for RT Airfare to Malawi, In-country travel, Insurance, Personal Travel Costs, Living Allowance (this includes housing and food), Immunizations, Visa Costs, Telecommunication, and Other Personal Expenses.
