Tour History

The Sea to Sea 2008 Bike Tour follows the shape and format of a similar cycling project hosted by the Christian Reformed Church in 2005. That year, the CRC was celebrating the 100th anniversary of the first Christian Reformed congregation in Canada and that summer's cross-country bike trek brought Canadian CRC's together like never before. The almost $1 million raised (over and above expenses) went to church development; many new church plants and new planters have benefited (and are still benefiting) from the additional resources available because of the bike tour.

Claire Elgersma was one of the 160 participants in that cycling adventure. It was her passion and excitement that propelled her to begin dreaming about another tour—this time through much of the United States and part of Canada. In 2006 she began sharing her idea with people from various CRC agencies and partners with a view to engaging the church in service on behalf of the poor and raising funds to alleviate poverty locally and globally. By Feb. 2007, the denomination's Board of Trustees had approved another ride for 2008.
