Policy Guidelines for Using Hall Monitors

Consider using the following in your policy:

·        Prospective hall monitors should go through the organization’s screening process before serving in this role.

·        Hall monitors should always wear an identification badge.

·        Hall monitors should report to a designated supervisor.

·        At least one hall monitor on duty will conduct facility checks whenever a youth program is in session.

·        Hall monitor duties are as follows:

  • To periodically check all meeting rooms until children and youth have left the facility. A check consists of looking into the room through the door or window in the door.
  • To periodically check bathrooms until all programs end and children/youth leave the facility. A check consists of opening the bathroom door and looking inside. Men will not check women’s bathrooms without someone else present; women will not check men’s bathrooms without someone else present.
  • To periodically check unoccupied meeting rooms until the program ends and all the children and youth have left. A check consists of opening the door to the room and turning on the lights.
  • To escort a child to the bathroom when necessary.
  • To direct children or youth found in the hallway to their meeting rooms when programs are in session.
  • To report suspicious activity to the designated supervisor.
