When CRWRC staff first arrived in Mali in the 1980s, many Fulani people with whom they worked were opposed to formal education. Parents bribed officials to take their children’s names off of school registries; tribal leaders told people they would go to hell if they learned to read anything other than Arabic. Today, Fulani people are reading and using CRWRC’s “box libraries,” which contain educational books written in the Fulani language.
