Take Action: Debt Relief for HaitiUPDATE: Great news advocates! On March 5, the Senate passed the Haiti Recovery Act (S. 2961). Contact your Senators and thank them for supporting Haiti's sustainable recovery! In the aftermath of Haiti’s worst earthquake in 200 years, we are praying for the people of Haiti, for CRWM and CRWRC relief staff, and contributing to CRWRC relief efforts. The Office of Social Justice encourages you to raise your voice as well as your prayers for fair assistance for Haiti, so that the country is able to make a sustainable recovery in the long term. Please contact your Senators and Representative today and urge them to co-sponsor the Debt Relief for Haiti Earthquake Recovery Act (H.R. 4573/S. 2961). Since the devestating earthquake, OSJ has advocated for the Canadian and U.S. governments to take two specific steps as part of a comprehensive response to the Haiti earthquake: (1) urge international financial institutions to provide massive assistance for relief and reconstruction in the form of grants, not loans, and (2) advocate for the cancellation of Haiti's remaining debts. The U.S. Congress has now introduced the Debt Relief for Haiti Earthquake Recovery Act (H.R. 4573/S. 2961), which would achieve both of these goals. We made significant progress towards these two goals when G7 countries--including Canada and the U.S.--pledged to work with international financial institutions to ensure that Haiti's multilateral debt is canceled. The U.S. Congress now has to pass the Debt Relief for Haiti Earthquake Recovery Act (H.R. 4573/S. 2961) to turn this pledge for debt relief into a reality. Raise your voice for Haiti today!
