Rejoicing allows us to give expression to the good things that happen in our families, our lives, our work, our world. In December 2002, when the CRC received a $2 million grant from Lilly Endowment Inc., there was much rejoicing — followed by anticipation. What blessings could both pastors and congregations receive from this wonderful gift? What blessings could the CRCNA as a whole receive?
It's now the beginning of 2007 and the final year of the SPE grant. During the past four years the program has, in many ways, far surpassed the goals first laid out in 2002. The plan projected that during the five year grant, 32 peer learning groups would be formed involving 20% of CRC pastors. To date, 85 groups involving 50% of CRC pastors have been formed. It was estimated that 2,880 participants would attend 72 continuing education events. To date 2,846 participants have attended 93 events.
The bi-annual regional pastor conferences have been wonderful times of encouragement and refreshment for those who pastor the pastors. “The conference felt like an oasis. I was richly blessed.” The mentoring conferences for mentors and mentees were much appreciated. “It was so incredible to come and be re-energized for ministry.” The funds made available for hiring regional pastors has greatly impacted some classes. “At the last classis meeting there was definitely a deeper sense of community and team work among the pastors.” This past fall a retreat was held for 138 pastors' spouses. One attendee said, “I am at a loss of words when I try to express how much this has meant to me.”
The goal of the SPE project is to support and strengthen pastors so they can help build vital congregations. And it's happening! For that we're rejoicing!
