Walk On: The Year of Faith Formation
In 2005 the Christian Reformed Church’s synod called on churches and classes to focus on faith formation in 2007-08.
This call to action followed research done by a synod study committee on church education. The research compared the number of children baptized to the number of young people who made profession of faith eighteen years later. For those baptized in the years 1943-45 the numbers were about equal. For those baptized from 1982-1985 the number of professions compared to baptisms had dropped to 60%. While there are different ways to interpret this data, it has caused concern for the many young people who are not making profession of faith and becoming adult members in the Christian Reformed Church.
By focusing on faith formation for a whole year, the denomination intended to help churches strengthen existing educational ministries by evaluating what they do well and focus on building better long-term programs to nurture the faith of all members. It was an exciting year of celebrating God’s faithfulness and rededicating ourselves to a deepening knowledge and experience of God’s work in our lives.
Although the Year of Faith Formation has come and gone, many of the resources and ideas that grew out of it have been incorporated into this ACRE website, including the Walk On Resource Book and Video. These articles, ideas, and resources form a foundation for our ongoing dialog about faith nurture.
