Disaster Response Services ~ 40 Years of Service

What does the love of Christ look like today?

You can see it in action in disaster response volunteers from the Christian Reformed World Relief Committee (CRWRC) as they serve those who survive floods, fires, and storms.

CRWRC Disaster Response Services (DRS) was established in 1972 and has responded to natural disasters across North America for 40 years. When a tornado struck Xenia, Ohio, in 1974, we were there. When an earthquake shook Whittier, Calif., in 1987, and Hurricane Andrew hit southern Florida in 1992, the CRWRC-DRS “green shirts” were there. In 2005, in the midst of the destruction of Hurricane Katrina, DRS volunteers brought hope and help to those who lost everything. Since 2011, work teams have been in small towns in Alabama that were destroyed by massive tornadoes, showing the love of Christ in action to people like Pastor Jessie and his family.

Pastor Jessie leads a small congregation of devoted Christians near Phil Campbell, Alabama. When he and his family saw the tornado approaching, they piled into their car and tried to outrun the storm. As they pulled onto the road a tree fell on their car, pinning it to the ground and trapping them inside. Amazingly,  the tornado passed right over top of them—but the weight of the huge fallen tree kept them safely on the ground. Although their home was ruined, they still marvel at how God protected them.

Pastor Jessie saw the love of Christ in action. Just like we have for 40 years, DRS volunteers were there to encourage and serve Pastor Jessie and his family in time of need, ready to rebuild, repair, and restore lives. This work continues because of you—your time, your prayers, your support—it’s the love of Christ through you.

Celebrate 40 years of service with CRWRC-DRS in 2012 through your gifts and offerings today by giving generously to help survivors in the US and Canada, like Pastor Jessie and his family, recover from natural disasters.
