Aid to Haiti in the Wake of Four Devasting HurricanesAfter four hurricanes in the span of twenty-two days, Haiti is at the breaking point. The cummulative effects of Hurricanes Fay, Gustav, Hanna, and Ike have brought widespread devastation to Haiti. In response, CRWRC is currently providing relief to those most in need. “Soil was already saturated with rain from Fay and Gustav when Hanna hit,” reported CRWRC-Haiti country director Ad De Blaiej. Now in the wake of Ike, nearly all areas of Haiti are hurricane-affected. Crops have been wiped out and bridges washed away. Food prices have skyrocketed. What will people eat when food is so hard to find and so expensive? Fortunately, CRWRC has established relationships with many community organizations and churches over the past thirty years while working in Haiti. As a result a quick and efficient response to the crisis could be implemented. CRWRC is providing emergency food and clothing to those most in need. Corrugated iron is being distributed in order to repair roofs blown away by wind and rain. And school fees are being paid to take some of the burden off families reeling from the disaster. In all, CRWRC is providing aid to approximately 3,000 hurricane survivors in twelve different Haitian communities.
