After Tuesday night's horrific tornadoes raked their way through neighborhoods and businesses in five Southern U.S. States, survey crews from the Christian Reformed World Relief Committee (www.crwrc.org) are traveling today into the destruction areas. The crews, in coordination with the organization's regional disaster response managers and partner agencies, will begin to determine a course of action for clean up, providing immediate financial assistance and planning for long-term recovery. CRWRC Readies for Wildfire Response
In response to the 2003 wildfires in California, the Christian Reformed World Relief Committee (CRWRC) rebuilt homes in low-income areas of the East hills of San Diego. Today, CRWRC volunteer managers living in the greater LA and Ripon areas are monitoring 18 wildfires in the same vicinities where the Organization has a number of churches and relief partners in the path of the fires. Four thousand homes were destroyed in the 2003 blaze. Katrina Two Years Later
Two years ago, when Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast, the Christian Reformed World Relief Committee flew into response - delivering emergency supplies, collecting donated goods, repairing homes, and preparing to receive evacuees expected from the debris. Today, CRWRC has provided nearly $4 million in post-Katrina services involving cleanup, assessments, and construction - and an additional $2 million is committed to ongoing reconstruction. While the first six weeks of the 2007 hurricane season that began on June first have been comparatively quiet, CRWRC's Bill Adams reports that within its Disaster Response Services (DRS) unit, activities surrounding existing relief efforts are greater than in a typical year including a "Home-Building Blitz" that will begin this fall in the Gulf Coast region.
