Ministry  in Sierra Leone at a Glance

The mission of the CRCNA to Sierra Leone started in 1979, with communities welcoming the CRC to do ministry among them. By 1991 this approach yielded increased agricultural production in many areas, leadership training programs formed, people got community-based primary health care and literacy classes, but also seventeen worshipping groups established.

A brutal civil war began in 1991 and reached the areas of CES operations in 1994.  All the physical infrastructure of the mission and villages was destroyed and many villagers were killed in the initial attacks.  The area was under rebel occupation for almost 5 years.

During this time the CES international and Sierra Leonean staff along with many local Christians began a large-scale relief effort.  Food and clothing were regularly distributed, refugees were helped, and wounded people were rescued and treated by CES trained medical staff.  The war ended in 2001.The churches multiplied, people saw that Christians care and that joined them throughout the war. Church growth is happening!

CES was nationalized in 2002 and now has an African board supervising its work.
