Ministry at a Glance

The Church in Eastern Africa grew rapidly during a revival in the early 1970s. Africa is now the “heartland of Christianity,” but in many cases also remains at the center of political conflict, disease, and poverty. Christianity is shallow due to a lack of well-trained leaders, poor teaching and preaching, and little access to scripture. This church needs to be encouraged, strengthened, and nurtured to mature.

Christian Reformed World Missions (CRWM) envisions lives and communities in Kenya transformed through a biblical worldview. To that end, CRWM works to empower and equip people to use their gifts to serve the Lord.  CRWM missionaries in Eastern and Southern Africa are working alongside CRC ministries and other mission agencies and partners in the region: Back to God Ministries International (BTGMI), Christian Reformed World Relief Committee (CRWRC), Partners Worldwide (PWW) and the Timothy Leadership Training Institute (TLT).

Ministry Focus

  • Leadership Development: Close to 80% of church leaders in Sub-Sahara Africa have little or no theological training. In partnership with the Timothy Leadership Training Institute, leaders are equipped with basic pastoral, teaching and sermon preparation skills.
  • Theological Education: CRWM assists in curriculum development, library development, visiting lecturers, scholarships and conferences in partnership with theological institutions.
  • Christian Education Development: Almost half of Africa’s population is 18 years old and under. CRWM partners with existing Christian schools and encourages local churches to establish Christian day schools so they can minister to this important age group. Through the Education Care program, CRWM equips teachers and administrators with skills that enable them to teach and lead through the eyes of faith.
  • Church Planting: CRWM supports local initiatives in planting churches among unreached people groups.
  • Department of Community Transformation: Where possible, World Missions supports partner theological institutions in developing Departments of Community Transformation (DCT), where courses in community development are taught. Most graduates from our partner theological schools work as tent-makers. Community development skills help them in their pastorate.
