Why we recommend it:
The call of Islam goes out to more than 1.5 billion Muslims worldwide. World Missions is engaging in ministry among Muslims in seven different countries around the world.  This video describes some of the ways World Missions is engaging with Muslims and calling Muslims to faith in Christ.

The video also highlights the work of a new inter-agency ministry of the Christian Reformed Church of North America called Advancing Ministry Among Muslims (AMAM).   One of the goals of AMAM is to equip Christian Reformed Church members to better understand Islam and to provide the tools they need to reach out to Muslims in the communities they share.

Engaging Islam

* Georges Houssney
* Boulder: Treeline Publishing, 2010
* Paperback, 208 pages

Where you can find it:

Why we recommend it:
Engaging Islam is designed to equip and inspire Christians to share the message of the Gospel with Muslims in their own communities and around the world. The author’s approach to sharing the Gospel is based on God’s love for all people and their need for salvation in Christ. Christians are to share the Gospel with Muslims out of love and on a personal level. The book provides a very brief history of the rise of Islam as well as some of the basic teachings and practices of Islam. It also includes some practical methods for sharing the Gospel with Muslims in a one to one relationship.

Engaging Islam is very readable with personal stories from the author’s experience. While it does not deal directly with the missiological issues of contextualization and the insider movement, it does indicate that the author would not be in favor of some of the approaches that are taken in this direction.

A very useful book for all Christians who want to learn more about Islam and who have a desire to reach out to Muslims in their own communities with the love of God and the message of salvation.

Muslims, Christians, and Jesus: Gaining Understanding and Building Relationships

* Carl Medearis
* Minneapolis: Bethany House, 2008
* Paperback, 191 pages

Where you can find it:

Why we recommend it:
The author’s aim in this book is to provide readers with tools that will help them to develop friendships with Muslims and to live their lives in ways that demonstrate the Good News. The book summarizes some of the basic teachings and practices of Islam and touches on some of the questions Muslims have about Christianity: “How can God have a son?” “Was Jesus crucified?” Also included are very practical ways to reach out to Muslims together with specific dos and don’ts when sharing with Muslims.

The tone of the book is very upbeat. It is based on the biblical command to love Muslims as our neighbors. When sharing the Good News with Muslims, our responsibility is to demonstrate the life of Jesus in our own lives, to stay focused on Jesus, and to let the Spirit change the hearts of our Muslim friends. A very helpful book for anyone serious about reaching Muslims in the communities we share together.

Tea With Hezbollah:  Sitting at the Enemies' Table, Our Journey Through the Middle East

* Ted Dekker and Carl Medearis
* New York:  Doublday, 2010
* Hardcover, 245 pages

Where you can find it:

Why we recommend it:
Tea With Hezbollah recounts the journey of two North American Christians to the Middle East on a quest to discover whether it really is possible to love your enemy as instructed by Jesus in the parable of the Good Samaritan.  Along the way, they drink tea and engage in frank dialogue with a number of individuals who are often seen as enemies of North Americans and of Christians.  These include, among others, a dean at a premier Islamic university in Egypt, the Saudi Arabian minister of information, the spiritual voice of Hezbollah in Lebanon, and a leader of Hamas in the West Bank.  The narrative travelogue style makes for a fast and engaging read.  Is Jesus' command to love our enemy really possible?  You might be surprised at the authors' conclusion.
