Focusing on His Word
Reformer Martin Luther is quoted as saying, “From the beginning of my Reformation I have asked God to send me neither dreams, nor visions, nor angels, but to give me the right understanding of His Word, the Holy Scriptures; for as long as I have God’s Word, I know that I am walking in His way and that I shall not fall into any error or delusion.” An avid student and teacher of scripture, Luther understood that within the Word itself one would find the guide necessary to have a personal and communal relationship with the triune God. He knew that scripture gave us the map that would not only show us where we came from, but where we were heading. It was God’s Word that gave Luther the authority and weight to write his 95 theses rebuking the Church’s abuse of power and to later promote the teaching of the priesthood of all believers, with no need for the clergy as intermediary between people and God.
The Psalmist once wrote “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path (Psalm 119:105).” In a postmodern world, where some see the Bible as a book of fables, the Word of God is our lifeline bringing personal and communal renewal effective for teaching, healing, and sharing to a hurting world.
For Discussion: What does God’s Word mean to your life? How do you experience His Word personally, and how does it guide your path?
Prayer: Dear Lord, help us to pray each day that Your Word becomes our book of choice for daily application and spiritual growth. Amen.
