Center for Faith & Scholarship and Campus Chapel
(University of Michigan)
Rolf Bouma, Pastor for Academic Ministries at the Campus Chapel
Ann Arbor, Michigan
The Center for Faith & Scholarship (CFS) is a Christian study center at the University of Michigan. The center's mission is to promote the Christian intellectual tradition on the campus of an elite public research institution as well as to encourage faculty, staff and students to pursue scholarship and shape their own intellectual vision in the light of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
To achieve this end, CFS offers courses and discussion groups, hosts graduate fellows groups, stimulates cultural engagement through movie reviews and book discussions and invites world-renowned Christian scholars to lecture and interact with students, faculty and departments of the University of Michigan.
The Campus Chapel is the campus outreach ministry of the Christian Reformed Church on the central campus of the University of Michigan, a 35,000-student state university in Ann Arbor. The Campus Chapel serves the University of Michigan and greater Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti area with an academic and religious community ministry. We provide and build a Christian community for undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, staff, and other interested persons. Our primary vision is a place where the Christian faith interacts positively with the intellectual environment of a major public university.
Our two primary goals are 1) the building of a strong Christian community of worship, prayer, discussion, and spiritual growth; and 2) witnessing to the university community of the power and intellectual strengths of the Christian faith.
We provide weekly worship services, discussion groups, educational and social gatherings, and a place for Christian prayer and reflection. We encourage the development of student leadership in these areas. The Chapel sponsors lectures and seminars by Christian speakers and interacts with other Christian ministries on the UM campus. Chapel staff members are involved with faculty and departments of the University. One of our pastors has been appointed as a lecturer at the university.
The Chapel is situated on the east side of the University of Michigan central campus. One of the main corridors for foot traffic for students to and from the university lies right through the Chapel grounds. We have a tremendous opportunity to reach out with the gospel to a 35,000-student population, many of whom are seeking answers to life’s questions.
