| Peacebuilding in Afghanistan |
| |
It's time for peace in Afghanistan. From 2007-2009 CCG has advocated for peacebuilding in this war-torn nation, based on a balanced approach to security, development, governance and reconciliation.
A few things to know:
- The Christian Reformed Church believes in peacebuilding, calling its members to be "agents of shalom in a war-torn world".
- Out of the spirit of our Synod's call to seek peace CCG has done research and advocacy on Canada's mission in Afghanistan - this includes:
- Careful consultatation with partners like Project Ploughshares and interaction with NGO's working in Afghanistan.
- Regular correspondence and face to face meetings with policy makers to discuss the mission.
- The CCG made a submission
to the Independent Panel on Canada's Future Role in Afghanistan ("Manley Panel"), which presented its finding to Canadians in January, 2008. Since then, Parliament has debated and passed a motion for a renewed military, training and reconstruction mission in Afghanistan until 2011.
- In Fall 2009 CCG asked the Cabinet Committee on Afghanistan
to study the implementation of the commitments to peacebuilding and reconciliation made in 2008. Progress on these priorities is critical as Canada considers its role in Afghanistan up to and following 2011.
- In the coming months CCG will be encouraging Canadian leaders to discern how Canada can be a bold partner for peace with the peoples of Afghanistan. This conversation is critical as NATO and the United States are considering new approaches to their mission.
- Now is the time to act boldly and hopefully for peace. Now is the time for your voice to be heard.

You're in the CCG's peacebuilding headquarters. From here, we encourage you to:
- learn more about CCG's study and statements on renewing Afghanistan, including its advocacy efforts, dialogue with Canada's political leaders, and extensive collection of peacebuilding organizations and books;
- mobilize your elected representatives, your church leaders, and your family and friends. CCG has made it easy, with tools, sample letters, and downloadable print materials for increasing awareness;
- pray and worship to lament brokenness, rejoice in Christ's promise to make all things new, and hope for justice and peace.
